Dr. Elaine E. Weiner is an Associate Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Maryland School of Medicine. She serves as the Medical Director of the Outpatient Research Program and First Episode Clinic at the Maryland Psychiatric Research Center, overseeing clinical care, research activities, and trainee supervision. Her work integrates administrative leadership with research in schizophrenia therapeutics.
Her education includes a B.A. in Pre-Medicine from The George Washington University (1983), an M.D. from UHS/The Chicago Medical School (1988), and a residency in General Psychiatry at the University of Maryland (1992).
Dr. Weiner's research focuses on optimizing treatments for schizophrenia, with emphasis on:
- Pharmacologic interventions (e.g., bupropion, varenicline, risperidone, oxytocin)
- Psychosocial strategies like group therapy and Cognitive Behavioral Social Skills Training (CBSST)
- Smoking cessation protocols tailored for schizophrenia patients
- Novel anti-inflammatory and neuromodulatory approaches
Her publications (2001–2021) demonstrate consistent focus on schizophrenia clinical trials, analyzing pharmacological efficacy, psychosocial adjuncts, and meta-analytic evidence. Recent work explores oxytocin/galantamine combinations, anti-inflammatory therapies, and CBSST protocols, reflecting a shift toward targeted biological and social interventions.
She directs clinical operations at the First Episode Clinic and collaborates on NIH-funded trials at the Maryland Psychiatric Research Center, working with teams investigating neurobiology, psychopharmacology, and rehabilitation in severe mental illness.
