Elaine Christman is a researcher in the Department of Physics at West Virginia University, part of the Eberly College of Arts and Sciences. She is actively involved in Physics Education Research, focusing on inclusive teaching practices and supporting diverse learners, particularly rural and first-generation college students.
Her research interests center on making physics accessible to all students. She emphasizes active learning and conceptual understanding in physics education, particularly in non-traditional and underserved populations. Her work is aligned with the First2 Network, which supports rural STEM majors. She believes physics education should extend beyond elite institutions to include all learners.
Elaine earned her Ph.D. in Physics and was inspired to pursue the field through transformative undergraduate experiences with Professors Gay and John Stewart, where she encountered active learning methods that made physics engaging and accessible. She previously taught in a rural, high-poverty high school in Arkansas, which shaped her commitment to equity in physics education.
She is passionate about building student confidence through hands-on experimentation and data analysis in Conceptual Physics courses. Her teaching philosophy emphasizes community, support, and resilience, encouraging students to seek help when facing challenges.
Elaine is part of a supportive academic community at WVU that values both professional and personal growth. She has played a key role in fostering inclusive research and teaching environments in physics.
