Ela Smith is a Lecturer at Renison University/University of Waterloo in the Social Development Studies Program. She also works as a Teaching and Learning Consultant - Indigenous Education at Mohawk College and serves as sessional faculty with the University of Toronto in the Indigenous Trauma and Resilience MSW program. Her roles focus on integrating Indigenous perspectives into academic practice and advocating for Indigenous children and families.
Her educational background includes a Master of Social Work (Indigenous Field of Study) from Wilfrid Laurier University and a Bachelor of Arts in Social Development Studies from the University of Waterloo.
Ela’s practice is rooted in a holistic trauma-informed Indigegogy framework, emphasizing critical reflection on how professional practice impacts marginalized communities. She teaches courses such as Introduction to Social Work, Social Group Work, and Social Work with Families, with a focus on understanding diversity in Canada.
She actively contributes to systemic change as a member of the Ontario Association of Children’s Aid Societies Board of Governors, prioritizing Indigenous child welfare from a provincial perspective.
