Eivind Kolflaath is a Professor of Philosophy and Law at the University of Bergen (UiB), affiliated with both the Institute for Philosophy and First-Year Studies and the Faculty of Law. He has held a permanent position since 1999 and has been associated with the Faculty of Law since 2004. Since 2023, he also serves as a Professor II at the Norwegian Police University College (Section for Forensic Investigation and Crime Scene Unit).
His research focuses on logic in broad terms, with a primary specialization in legal evidence assessment, forensic investigation, and the intersection of philosophy with jurisprudence. Notable contributions include works on Bayesian networks in legal evidence analysis, hypothesis formulation in criminal investigations, and the philosophical foundations of evidence law.
Recent publications emphasize methodological advancements in forensic science and the application of probabilistic reasoning to criminal trials. He has contributed to over 30 peer-reviewed articles and authored/co-authored multiple books, including Etterforskningens logikk (2023) and Formallogikk (2020). His work frequently critiques traditional legal methodologies while advocating for evidence-based approaches rooted in logic and empirical analysis.
Kolflaath actively participates in academic debates on legal epistemology, judicial reasoning, and interdisciplinary research between law and philosophy. His current projects explore the operationalization of evidence standards in prosecutorial practice and the role of narrative structures in courtroom decision-making.
