Dr. Eithne Kavanagh serves as a Senior Lecturer and Research Fellow in the Psychology Department within the School of Social Sciences at Nottingham Trent University. She is an active member of the Evolution and Social Interaction Research Group and currently leads the human component of Prof. Bridget Waller's ERC-funded FACEDIFF project, which investigates individual differences in facial expression across human and nonhuman primates.
Her research centers on the evolution of communication and social behavior, with particular emphasis on dominance dynamics and power structures in primates. Early work examined chimpanzee and bonobo communication through observational behavioral data and phylogenetic analysis, while current research explores human facial behavior in natural social interactions to uncover evolutionary origins of individual expression differences. This trajectory reflects a sophisticated integration of primatology, evolutionary psychology, and social neuroscience methodologies.
Recent publications demonstrate a clear research evolution from nonhuman primate studies toward human facial behavior analysis, with significant contributions to understanding how facial expressiveness functions in social networks and digital environments. The 2024 publications particularly highlight the social advantages of facial expressiveness and its role in computer-mediated communication.
Eithne collaborates extensively with Prof. Bridget Waller's research team and contributes to the Evolution and Social Interaction Research Group's mission. Her work on the FACEDIFF project represents a major interdisciplinary effort combining primatology, psychology, and evolutionary biology to decode the foundations of facial communication across species.
