Eitan Zemel is the W. Edwards Deming Professor of Quality and Productivity and Deputy Dean at the New York University Leonard N. Stern School of Business. He also serves as Deputy Vice Chancellor for Strategy at NYU Shanghai, playing a pivotal role in shaping the academic and operational framework of NYU’s global campus. He has held numerous leadership positions, including Founding Chair of the Operations Management Department and later the IOMS Department (now Technology, Operations and Statistics), and has overseen major academic programs such as the MBA, Executive MBA, and Global Master’s in Business Analytics.
- Ph.D. in Operations Research, Carnegie Mellon University (1976)
- M.Sc. in Applied Physics, Weizmann Institute of Science, Israel (1972)
- B.Sc. in Physics and Mathematics, Hebrew University, Israel (1970)
Professor Zemel’s research centers on computations, algorithms, and complexity, with recent expansions into supply chain management, operations strategy, service operations, and incentive design in operational contexts. His work bridges theoretical rigor and practical application, particularly in optimizing business processes and urban systems. He co-authored the influential book Managing Business Process Flows and has contributed extensively to journals such as Operations Research, Management Science, and Games and Economic Behavior.
His recent publications reflect a strong trend toward urban congestion management, where he proposes a reservation-based system to eliminate traffic congestion through operational principles. These works integrate ideas from network flow theory, just-in-time scheduling, and policy design, demonstrating a shift toward impactful, real-world solutions. Earlier works focus on algorithmic efficiency, game-theoretic models, and supply chain resilience, showing a deep and evolving engagement with operations research.
Notable recognition includes the Leadership Excellence Award from the Department of Marketing (2024).
- Editorial Board Member: Management Science, Production and Operations Management, Manufacturing and Service Operations
- Advisory and leadership roles in multiple global academic programs including TRIUM Global Executive MBA and NYU Shanghai’s business and engineering initiatives
- Recipient of internal leadership awards and engaged in institutional strategy and development
Professor Zemel has been instrumental in founding and leading academic departments and global programs. He was a founding member of the team that conceived NYU Shanghai, where he served as Founding Dean of Business and Engineering, Associate Vice Chancellor, and now Deputy Vice Chancellor. His leadership extends to shaping curriculum, research direction, and institutional partnerships across NYU’s global network.
