Eirik Lang Harris is an Associate Professor of Philosophy at Colorado State University and Director of Graduate Studies. His research focuses on early Chinese philosophy, particularly Confucian and Legalist thought, emphasizing their relevance to contemporary political and ethical debates. He holds a PhD in Philosophy from the University of Utah, an MA in Asian Languages & Cultures (Chinese) from the University of Michigan, an MA in Philosophy from UC San Diego, and a BA in Philosophy, Politics, and Economics (PPE) from Pomona College.
Before joining CSU, Harris held positions at Hong Kong Baptist University, City University of Hong Kong, Yonsei University (Seoul), and Santa Clara University. His work bridges classical Chinese texts with modern political philosophy, exploring themes like morality’s role in governance, legalist frameworks, and cross-cultural ethical comparisons.
His key research areas include early Chinese political realism, the intersection of morality and law in Legalist texts, and applying classical Chinese philosophy to contemporary issues. He has authored The Shenzi Fragments: A Philosophical Analysis and Translation (2016) and co-edited Adventures in Chinese Realism (2022). His scholarship has appeared in major outlets like the Oxford Handbook of Chinese Philosophy and Routledge Companion to Chinese Philosophy.
Harris’s academic journey reflects a commitment to global philosophical dialogue, having held visiting fellowships at Victoria University of Wellington and engaging with institutions across Asia and North America.
