Eileen Carroll Sweeney is a Professor of Philosophy at Boston College, specializing in medieval and early modern philosophy. She holds a Ph.D. from the University of Texas, Austin. Her research focuses on language, science, and moral psychology in medieval contexts, with particular attention to the passions and natural law. She actively participates in interdisciplinary initiatives like the PULSE service-learning program and an interdisciplinary working group on virtue development.
Her research projects include a history of theories of the passions from Augustine to Kant and the transition from liberal arts to Aristotelian science in the medieval period. She teaches courses on medieval political theory, Thomas Aquinas, Aristotle, and medieval notions of science. Her recent publications address Anselm of Canterbury’s intellectual methods, gender and emotions in patristic thought, and medieval rhetorical practices.
Current research explores the intersection of medieval theological writing and modern moral psychology, with a focus on affectivity and virtue development. Her work bridges philosophical analysis with practical ethical engagement through teaching and interdisciplinary collaboration.
