Eileen Brennan is a Research Professor at Portland State University's School of Social Work and affiliated with the Regional Research Institute for Human Services. She joined PSU's faculty in 1986 and transitioned from a full-time position to her current role after retiring in 2011. Her career spans academic and administrative roles at the University of Kansas, Pacific University, and Portland State University.
Education:
- B.S. from Mundelein College; Loyola University, Chicago
- M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of Notre Dame
Research focuses on social sustainability, family support systems, and the mental health of young people, with a particular emphasis on challenges faced by working caregivers of children with disabilities. Her work integrates qualitative studies (e.g., focus groups, interviews) and quantitative analysis of national datasets like the National Survey of Children’s Health.
Current projects include workplace support systems for caregivers and community-based interventions to reduce caregiving stress. She receives funding through the Regional Research Institute Community Research Fund.
Outside academia, she supports youth mentoring initiatives and enjoys hiking, bridge, and reading fiction/non-fiction.
