Effie Chiu is a Lecturer in the Department of Linguistics & Language Development at San José State University (SJSU). She has held this position since 2009 and also teaches writing courses in the English and Public Health & Recreation departments. Her expertise spans General Education (GE) communications courses, academic/content ESL/EFL, and vocational English instruction. From 2021–2024, she was awarded a Fulbright grant to advise on English teaching development in Taiwan.

Research interests focus on second language writing pedagogy, genre-based assessment, and innovative instructional methods. Her recent work includes applying song analysis to grammar teaching and evaluating real-world writing practices through genre theory.

She has presented at conferences such as the Symposium on Second Language Writing (Taipei, 2011) and the CATESOL State Conference (Santa Clara, 2010).
