Edythe D. London is an Adjunct Professor in the Departments of Psychiatry and Neuroscience at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. She is a pioneer in brain imaging research, focusing on addiction and translational studies that bridge psychiatry, pharmacology, and neuroscience. Her work employs multi-modal brain imaging techniques, including PET, MRS, and structural/functional MRI, to investigate neurochemical and circuit-level abnormalities in addiction.
Her research has led to groundbreaking discoveries such as mapping drug-induced euphoria and craving in the human brain, visualizing cerebral distributions of abused drugs, and developing external brain imaging probes. She has contributed to radiotracer development for neuropsychiatric disorders, emphasizing corticostriatal circuitry, dopamine receptor signaling, and executive functioning. Her recent work builds on seminal findings of prefrontal cortical and cognitive deficits in cocaine users, identifying potential therapeutic targets.
Dr. London holds a Ph.D. and has served in leadership roles at institutions like the National Institute on Drug Abuse, including Chief of the Neuropharmacology Lab and Director of the Brain Imaging Center. Her career spans prestigious academic appointments, including Adjunct Professor at the University of Maryland School of Medicine and Part-time Associate Professor at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.
