Edwin Wan is an Associate Professor at West Virginia University School of Medicine with joint appointments in the Department of Microbiology, Immunology & Cell Biology, Department of Neuroscience, and Rockefeller Neuroscience Institute. He earned his PhD from City University of Hong Kong in 2007.
His research focuses on neuroimmune interactions in neurological diseases:
- Multiple sclerosis pathogenesis: Investigating cytokine signaling (GM-CSF, IL-17, IL-23) and STAT5 tetramerization in autoimmune neuroinflammation.
- Ischemic stroke recovery: Studying CD11c+ microglia dynamics and immune-glial crosstalk for neuroprotection.
His work has attracted NIH funding including:
- NIAID R01 (2024): STAT5 tetramerization in neuroinflammation
- NINDS R21 (2022): CD11c+ microglia in stroke recovery
- NIGMS/WV-INBRE award (2023): Metabolism in MS fatigue
He mentors graduate researchers including Kelly Monaghan (PhD, graduated 2022) and Kody Moore (current PhD student). The Wan Lab, established in 2016, hosts undergraduate technicians and interns.
