Edwin Nissen is a Professor and Canada Research Chair (Tier 2) in the School of Earth and Ocean Sciences at the University of Victoria. His research specializes in earthquakes and active tectonics using geodetic remote sensing, seismology, and field geomorphology to understand fault mechanics and seismic hazards.
Research Focus: Mechanics of large earthquake ruptures, uncharacteristic seismic events, differential lidar techniques, drone-based fault mapping, and active tectonics of Cascadia and the Canadian Cordillera. Current projects include SchoolShake outreach program deploying seismometers in schools across British Columbia.
Education:
- DPhil in Earth Sciences, University of Oxford
- MSc in Natural Sciences (Geology), University of Cambridge
- BA in Natural Sciences (Geology), University of Cambridge
Research employs advanced techniques including InSAR, lidar differencing, and seismic analysis to investigate earthquake deformation patterns across diverse tectonic settings from Iran to New Zealand. The group maintains active field programs using drone lidar systems to map fault geomorphology in challenging terrains.
Scientific Awards:
- Canada Research Chair (Tier 2)
- Award for Research Excellence
- Editors' Citation for Excellence in Refereeing
The UVic Earthquakes Group collaborates with Geological Survey of Canada researchers and maintains instrumentation for high-resolution topographic mapping of active faults. Outreach initiatives include SchoolShake citizen seismology program engaging schools across Vancouver Island.
