معرفی
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Cengiz Zabcı is an Associate Professor at Istanbul Technical University (ITU), Department of Geological Engineering, Faculty of Mining. His research focuses on Paleoseismology, Strike-Slip Faults, and Tectonic Geomorphology, with expertise in active tectonics and fault dynamics. He holds a PhD in Earth System Science from ITU (2013), an MSc (2005) and BSc (2003) from the same institution. He has held visiting researcher roles at Ludwig-Maximilians University München, University of Lisbon, and Institut Français de Recherche LExploitation de la Mer.
Key roles include Doctorate Lecturer (2017–present) and Vice President of the Department (2018–2020). His research spans seismic hazard analysis, fault slip rate studies, and continental tectonics. Notable projects include investigations of the North Anatolian Fault and the Malatya Fault, with contributions to understanding earthquake recurrence and tectonic deformation mechanisms.
Zabcı has authored over 34 publications, including studies on the Kahramanmaraş triple junction, Elazığ earthquake arrest mechanisms, and the Saharides orogeny. His work bridges field geology, geochronology, and seismology to address continental-scale tectonic questions. He advises graduate students on topics like fault mechanics and earthquake history, and teaches courses on Field Geology and Tectonics.
He is a member of the Geological Society of America, Seismological Society of America, European Geosciences Union, and American Geophysical Union. His recent projects include mapping the Pazarcık Earthquake (2023) and assessing seismic risks in Istanbul. His lab and fieldwork focus on integrating morphotectonic and paleoseismic data to advance understanding of active fault systems.
