Edwin A. Alvarez

Dr. Edwin A. Alvarez serves as a Clinical Professor and Director for Clinical Trials in the Division of Gynecologic Oncology within the Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology & Reproductive Sciences at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) and the Helen Diller Family Comprehensive Cancer Center. Board certified as a Gynecologic Oncologist, he specializes in treating female reproductive system malignancies with expertise in both open and minimally invasive surgical approaches.

Dr. Alvarez holds a strong commitment to medical education, teaching medical students, residents, and fellows at UCSF. His educational background includes a B.A. in Sociology from UC Berkeley (1995), an M.D. from UC San Diego (2000), a residency in Obstetrics & Gynecology from USC (2004), and a Fellowship in Gynecologic Oncology from the University of Miami (2007).

His research interests focus primarily on gynecologic malignancies, particularly ovarian, cervical, and endometrial cancers. His publication record demonstrates expertise in clinical trial design, molecular pathways in cancer progression, and innovative therapeutic approaches including targeted therapies and combination treatments. His work spans both clinical studies and basic science investigations into cancer biology.

Dr. Alvarez has received notable recognition including a Research Award from USC Ob/Gyn (2004) and the Women's Reproductive Health Research Award (NIH K12) (2007). As Director of Clinical Trials, he is actively involved with NRG Oncology, the NCI-sponsored cooperative group for oncology clinical trials.

Committed to diversity and inclusion, Dr. Alvarez has mentored numerous at-risk youth and LatinX residents. Fluent in Spanish, he has been involved with culturally sensitive indigent care in gynecologic oncology, demonstrating his dedication to serving diverse patient populations.
