Edward Wouk is a Reader in Art History and Visual Studies (1400-1800) and Head of the Department of Art History and Cultural Practices at the University of Manchester. He has been at Manchester since 2012 and is an active scholar, teacher, and curator specializing in early modern art, particularly Netherlandish art and print culture.

Research Interests: Edward Wouk's research focuses on early modern art from the Gutenberg revolution to the Counter Reformation. His work explores Netherlandish art history, print culture, material culture studies, and intellectual history. He investigates the status of the image in early modern art, cultural exchanges between Italy and northern Europe, and artistic theory.
Recent Publications: His recent publications reflect interdisciplinary approaches combining material culture studies, history of emotions, and digital microscopy to examine printmaking and artistic production. Key themes include Netherlandish identity formation, religious upheaval during the Dutch Revolt, and the materiality of artistic processes in northern Europe.

Advising and Grants: Wouk supervises masters and doctoral students on early modern art topics. His research has received major funding from the British Academy, Renaissance Society of America, Lila Acheson Wallace Foundation, Leverhulme Trust, and Australian Research Council.
Collaborations and Projects: He co-curated landmark exhibitions including Marcantonio Raimondi and Raphael (2016-2017) and Albrecht Dürer's Material World (2023-2024), leading international research projects funded by the Australian Research Council and Getty Paper Project.
