معرفی
Edward Witten (born August 26, 1951) is a Professor at the Institute for Advanced Study specializing in Mathematical Physics. He is widely regarded as one of the most influential theoretical physicists of our time, with Time Magazine naming him the world's greatest theoretical physicist in 2004.
Witten's research focuses on the intersection of theoretical physics and advanced mathematics, particularly in the areas of:
- Quantum Gravity
- Super Symmetric Quantum Field Theories
- Superstring Theory
- Topology and Geometry applications to physics
His work has fundamentally shaped modern theoretical physics, most notably through his contributions to string theory where he demonstrated that different versions of string theory were actually different manifestations of the same underlying theory.
Witten's scientific achievements have been recognized with numerous prestigious awards:
- Fields Medal (1990) - first physicist ever to receive this honor
- National Medal of Science (2002)
- Crafoord Prize (2008)
- Lorentz Medal and Isaac Newton Medal (2010)
- MacArthur Foundation Fellowship (1982)
With over 340 publications spanning quantum field theory, string theory, and mathematical physics, Witten continues to be an active and influential researcher at the Institute for Advanced Study. His unique ability to connect deep mathematical structures with physical theories has opened new research pathways that continue to influence both physics and mathematics communities worldwide.
