Edward Swenson is a Professor at the University of Toronto's St. George Campus and Director of the Archaeology Centre. His research spans the ancient Andes (Moche civilization, Jequetepeque Valley) and Khmer civilization (Cambodia), focusing on ritual architecture, urbanization processes, and power dynamics in pre-industrial societies.
His theoretical interests incorporate semiotics, materiality, landscape history, and New Materialist theories. Current fieldwork includes directing the Jatanca-Huaca Colorada-Tecapa Project in Peru (400 BC-AD 1000) and co-directing the Yaśodharāśramas Archaeological Project in Cambodia, examining how Angkorian rulers spread cultural influence through religious infrastructure.
Swenson's research methodology combines GIS spatial analysis, ceramic studies, and architectural examination to understand how built environments shape social dispositions. His cross-cultural perspective highlights the importance of diverse historical trajectories for contemporary socio-political understanding.
Grants received from prestigious institutions including:
- Canadian Foundation for Innovation (CFI)
- National Geographic Society
