Edward Sugden

Edward Sugden is a Senior Lecturer in American Studies at King’s College London’s Department of English (Faculty of Arts & Humanities). He joined King’s in 2013 and specializes in 19th- and 20th-century American literature, focusing on its social function, theories of time/space, and minoritarian/multilingual narratives. His research explores how literature archives unrealized political conditions and shapes societal realities. He currently writes a biography of Moby-Dick and collaborates with organizations like The Reader and Literacy Pirates to apply literature for social impact.

Teaching emphasizes literature as a world-creating force, with modules like Coming of Age in America highlighting its role in societal organization. He welcomes PhD students in long 19th-century American literature.
