Edward Newman is a Professor of International Security at the University of Leeds, affiliated with the School of Politics and International Studies within the Faculty of Social Sciences. His research focuses on international security studies, including intrastate armed conflict, resource scarcity, transitional international order dynamics, and peacebuilding. He previously served as Head of the Graduate School for the Faculty of Social Sciences (2021–2023). Newman holds editorial roles at journals such as the European Journal of International Security and International Relations of the Asia Pacific, and co-edits the Routledge Studies in Civil Wars and Intra-State Conflict book series.
His academic career includes visiting positions at Dublin City University, Waseda University, Tohoku University, and Tokyo University. He previously directed research at the United Nations University’s Peace and Governance Programme in Tokyo. Newman has contributed to global policy discussions through roles like member of the UK’s Economic and Social Research Council Grant Assessment Panel.
Research interests span theoretical security studies (including critical approaches and human security), civil war dynamics, multilateral governance, and post-conflict reconstruction. He teaches and leads the MA Global Security Challenges and co-leads the MA Conflict, Peacebuilding and Development. His work emphasizes interdisciplinary themes linking security, justice, and development.
