Edward Maguire is a Professor in the School of Criminology & Criminal Justice at Arizona State University (ASU), where he also directs the Public Safety Innovation Lab. He holds a visiting professorship at the University of South Wales. He earned his Ph.D. in Criminal Justice from SUNY Albany in 1997. His research focuses on policing strategies, violence prevention, and global criminal justice systems, emphasizing the intersection of policy and practice.
Key areas of expertise include police response to crowds, gang violence reduction, officer wellness, and procedural justice. He has conducted research in 26 countries, authored seven books, and published over 130 journal articles. Notable projects include evaluations of CureViolence initiatives in Trinidad & Tobago and studies on human trafficking in the Philippines. Maguire frequently advises policymakers and law enforcement agencies internationally.
Recent work explores intergroup communication dynamics in policing, the impact of protest policing practices, and violence prevention strategies. He has contributed to major initiatives like the President’s Task Force on 21st Century Policing and testified on protest policing reforms. His grants include funding from the Inter-American Development Bank and the Laura and John Arnold Foundation.
Maguire teaches courses on research methods and program evaluation at ASU. He leads the Center for the Study and Practice of Violence Reduction, advancing translational criminology to bridge research and real-world application.
