Dr. Edward Madigan is a Senior Lecturer in Public History and World War One at the Department of History, Royal Holloway, University of London. He serves as Director of the MA in Public History and the London Centre for Public History and Heritage. His research focuses on British and Irish experiences and memories of the First World War, including maternal bereavement during the war and the British experience of the Irish War of Independence. He has collaborated with institutions like the Commonwealth War Graves Commission and advised UK and Irish governments on centenary commemorations.
Before joining Royal Holloway, Madigan held roles at Trinity College Dublin and contributed to the Commonwealth War Graves Commission’s centenary project. He co-edits the Historians for History blog and has appeared on international TV discussing historical topics. His expertise spans public history, cultural history of war, and commemoration practices. He actively engages with heritage organizations such as the National Army Museum and Black Cultural Archives.
Madigan’s teaching includes postgraduate modules in public history and heritage, emphasizing London’s vibrant cultural institutions. He has published extensively, including books like Faith Under Fire and The Jewish Experience of the First World War . His work addresses themes like religious faith among soldiers, Irish war memory, and the intersection of history with public policy.
