Edward L. Braun is a Professor in the Department of Biology at the University of Florida (UF), affiliated with the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and the UF Genetics Institute. He holds a Ph.D. in Biology from the University of New Mexico (1997) and has conducted postdoctoral research at the National Center for Genome Resources (NCGR) and The Ohio State University (OSU). His research focuses on genome evolution, molecular evolution, phylogenetics, and computational approaches to understand evolutionary patterns in organisms like birds, reptiles, fungi, and plants.
Education: PhD in Biology, University of New Mexico, 1997; Postdoctoral studies at NCGR (Neurospora genome project) and OSU (plant transcription factors). Current roles include mentoring graduate students, teaching genetics courses, and leading the Early Bird project (avian phylogeny) and the crocodilian genome project (GATOR Genome).
Research Interests: Comparative genomics, phylogenetic theory, gene duplication/loss, and computational methods applied to avian evolution and genome architecture. He emphasizes integrating large-scale genomic data to resolve evolutionary relationships and functional adaptations.
Advancing phylogenetic methodologies and addressing challenges in phylogenomic data (e.g., incomplete lineage sorting, horizontal gene transfer). Collaborations span avian systematics, crocodilian genomics, and fungal genomics (Neurospora). His work bridges evolutionary biology, genomics, and computational science.
