Dr. Edward Hensel is a Professor of Mechanical Engineering and Associate Dean for Research and Graduate Studies at the Kate Gleason College of Engineering, RIT. He holds a Ph.D. from New Mexico State University and a B.S. from Clarkson University. His research focuses on computational methods in engineering, thermal transport, and aerosol exposure systems, with recent emphasis on electronic cigarette emissions and public health impacts. He directs RIT's PhD in Engineering program, fostering interdisciplinary doctoral research aligned with global challenges like energy, healthcare, and transportation.
He has been awarded two U.S. patents, authored a book, and published over 100 articles. His work includes developing the Topography Analysis Program (TAP) and programmable emissions system (PES) for natural environment studies of tobacco products. Notable honors include ASME Fellow and teaching awards.
Research interests span mechanical engineering fundamentals, environmental health, and interdisciplinary innovation. His grants include NIH-funded studies on ENDS emissions and FDA-regulated product testing protocols. He advises PhD students like S. Emma Sarles and collaborates on projects such as biomimetic aerosol exposure systems and wearable respiratory monitors.
