Edward Hall is a Senior Lecturer in Political Theory at the University of Sheffield's School of Sociological Studies, Politics and International Relations. His research examines political ethics, liberal political thought, and realist approaches to political theory, with particular expertise in Judith Shklar's liberalism of fear. He was awarded a 2021 Leverhulme Trust Research Fellowship to study the contemporary relevance of Shklar's work.
Research focuses include:

- Compromise and integrity in democratic systems
- Bernard Williams' political theory
Recent publications demonstrate sustained engagement with the liberalism of fear, political integrity, and methodological debates in realist political theory. Articles frequently analyze 20th-century political thinkers including Shklar, Williams, and Berlin, with emerging themes in human rights legitimacy and compromise ethics. Current book project examines power dynamics in 21st-century applications of fear-based liberalism.
He co-edited Political Ethics: A Handbook (Princeton, 2022) and authored Value, Conflict, and Order (Chicago, 2020). Research has been supported by the Leverhulme Trust and disseminated through international workshops including MANCEPT Political Theory sessions.
