Edward Burke is an Assistant Professor in the History of Warfare after 1945 at University College Dublin (UCD), where he also serves as Director of the International War Studies MA programme and Director of Graduate Teaching. He previously held positions at the University of Nottingham (2017-2022) and the University of Portsmouth (2015-2017). He earned a BA (Hons) from Trinity College Dublin, a MA from King’s College London, and a DPhil from the University of St. Andrews.
His research focuses on military cohesion, paramilitarism, intelligence, and political violence, with particular emphasis on Northern Ireland and post-colonial conflicts. Notable works include Ulster's Lost Counties (2024) and An Army of Tribes (2018). He has advised on British policy during the Troubles and contributed to parliamentary briefings. His 2020-2022 fellowship explored paramilitary violence in Ulster since 1920.
