Edward Banning is a Professor of Archaeology at the University of Toronto, specializing in the beginnings of village life and political-economic inequality in southwest Asia, with a focus on the southern Levant. He leads the Wadi Ziqlab and Wadi Quseiba Projects in northern Jordan, exploring Epipalaeolithic, Neolithic, Chalcolithic, and Early Bronze Age sites through excavation and survey. His research integrates spatial analysis, archaeological theory, and laboratory methods to understand social evolution and environmental adaptation.
Holds a PhD from the University of Toronto (1985). His work examines architectural spatial organization, agricultural economy development, and methodological advancements in archaeological survey and laboratory analysis. He has directed major excavations at sites like Tabaqat ar-Rutūbah and ‘Ayn Qusaybah, advancing understanding of prehistoric settlement patterns and material culture.
Research interests include experimental archaeology, dating techniques, and the impacts of metal detecting on cultural heritage. His publications emphasize archaeological methodological rigor, including seminal works on sampling theory, spatial analysis, and laboratory practices. Advises graduate students in prehistoric archaeology and mentors projects in Jordan and Cyprus.
