Edward A. Silver

Edward A. Silver is the William A. Brownell Collegiate Professor Emeritus of Education and Professor of Mathematics at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. He serves as Senior Associate Dean for Research and Graduate Studies in the School of Education. His career includes roles as Dean of the University of Michigan-Dearborn School of Education, Chair of the Educational Studies Program, and Associate Dean of Academic Affairs. Prior to academia, he taught in middle/high schools and universities in New York, Illinois, California, and Pennsylvania. He holds a Ph.D. from Teachers College, Columbia University.

Education:

• Doctorate in Education (Teachers College, Columbia University)
• Previous teaching experience in secondary schools and universities

Research Interests: Focuses on mathematical thinking, equitable instruction design, innovative assessment methods, teacher professional development, and bridging research and practice in education. He emphasizes problem-solving, problem-posing, and formative assessment strategies in mathematics education, particularly in diverse and urban settings.

Grants & Projects: Led initiatives like the QUASAR project (equity-focused middle school math reform), DELTA (algebra education), and Bosch-funded K-12 STEM programs. Current work includes the Bosch Eco & STEM Teacher (BEST) Grant Program (2022-2025).
