Eduardo Kohn is an Associate Professor and Anthropology for the Ecozoic Lead at McGill University's Department of Anthropology (Faculty of Arts). He holds a Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin-Madison (2002). His research focuses on reimagining anthropology beyond anthropocentrism, exploring how nonhuman entities like forests 'think' through semiotic frameworks. Central to his work is the 2013 book *How Forests Think*, which won the Gregory Bateson Award and has influenced global discussions on ecology and ethics. Kohn collaborates with Amazonian indigenous groups and interdisciplinary teams in art, law, and science to address climate crisis challenges.
Education: Ph.D. in Anthropology, University of Wisconsin-Madison (2002); earlier studies include work on Runa communities in Ecuador (evident in his 2007 and 2005 publications).
Research emphasizes 'ecologizing ethics' through semiotic analysis of Amazonian ecosystems, advocating for ethical orientations rooted in nonhuman lifeworlds. His current project *Forest for the Trees* explores forests as ethical guides in the Anthropocene. Interdisciplinary collaborations include theatre, music, and museum curation, reflecting his belief in art's role in ecological discourse.
Key honors include the 2014 Gregory Bateson Award. His teaching focuses on anthropological theory and 'beyond the human' approaches, with leadership roles in McGill's Leadership for the Ecozoic initiative. Advises students researching topics like Rights of Nature law, postcolonial semiotics, and cetacean ethnography.
Labs/teams: Collaborates with an Ecuadorian network of indigenous activists, lawyers, and artists. Active in debates over psychedelic science, Rights of Nature jurisprudence, and museum projects like the permanent exhibit inspired by *How Forests Think*.
