Professor Edmund Linfield serves as Professor at the University of Leeds and Research Area Lead for the Royce Institute's Atoms to Devices Research Area. His work centers on the terahertz frequency region of the electromagnetic spectrum, bridging electronics and optics through innovative cross-disciplinary approaches.
His research program focuses on terahertz quantum cascade lasers based on semiconductor superlattice structures, terahertz imaging/spectroscopy systems in both free-space and guided-wave configurations, and fundamental studies of terahertz-matter interactions. This work addresses critical challenges in accessing the terahertz spectrum, with applications spanning biology, chemistry, medicine, physics, materials science, and astronomy. His group extensively investigates molecular beam epitaxial growth, device fabrication, and measurement techniques for terahertz technologies.
Professor Linfield's contributions enable researchers across multiple disciplines to exploit terahertz radiation for studying molecular vibrations and material properties, driving advancements in both fundamental science and practical applications through the Royce Institute's national research infrastructure.
