Edmond Bowers is a Professor in the College of Behavioral, Social and Health Sciences at Clemson University, with a joint appointment in the Department of Education and Human Development. He holds a Ph.D. in Applied Developmental and Educational Psychology from Boston College (2009), an M.Ed. in Middle School Science (University of Notre Dame, 2003), and a B.S. in Science-Business and Anthropology (University of Notre Dame, 2001). Prior to Clemson, he was a Post-Doctoral Fellow and Research Assistant Professor at Tufts University's Institute for Applied Research in Youth Development (IARYD).
Dr. Bowers's research is grounded in the Positive Youth Development (PYD) framework, focusing on the Five Cs model and its application to youth relationships with non-parental adults. His work explores how mentorship, teaching, and community contexts foster strengths like critical reflection, hope, and self-regulation to promote healthy development globally. Recent publications emphasize nature-based programs, hybrid mentorship models, and PYD in diverse cultural settings.
His research trends highlight interdisciplinary applications of PYD across psychology, education, and public health, with subfields including mentorship, self-regulation, cultural adaptation, and social justice. Dr. Bowers co-edits Applied Developmental Science and contributes to the National Mentoring Resource Center as a certified CrimeSolutions.gov Program Reviewer.
