Edmond Awad is a Senior Lecturer (Assistant Professor) in the Department of Economics and the Institute for Data Science and Artificial Intelligence at the University of Exeter. He concurrently serves as a Senior Research Fellow at the Uehiro Oxford Institute and the Wellcome Centre for Ethics and Humanities at the University of Oxford (on secondment from Exeter). Additionally, he holds the position of Associate Research Scientist at the Max Planck Institute for Human Development. His research focuses on AI ethics, computational social science, and multi-agent systems.
Edmond holds a BSc in Informatics Engineering (2007, Tishreen University, Syria), an MSc in Computing and Information Science (2011, Masdar Institute, UAE), a PhD in Interdisciplinary Engineering (2015, Masdar Institute), and an MSc in Media Arts and Sciences (2017, MIT).
He pioneered the Moral Machine initiative, a crowdsourced platform exploring ethical dilemmas in autonomous systems, which garnered over 10 million participants. Another project, MyGoodness, collected 3 million responses on charity-related dilemmas. His work appears in Nature, PNAS, and Nature Human Behaviour, and has been featured in major media outlets like The New York Times and Der Spiegel.
His affiliations span academia and research institutions, reflecting his interdisciplinary approach to AI ethics and societal impact.
