Professor Edhem Eldem is a faculty member in the History Department at Boğaziçi University who was elected to the prestigious International Chair of Turkish and Ottoman History at the Collège de France. In this role, he delivers lectures and conducts research for a five-year term. His appointment represents a significant academic honor, as he was the first scholar from Turkey to be elected to one of the Collège de France's six international chairs.
Professor Eldem's primary affiliation is with Boğaziçi University in Istanbul, Turkey, where he serves as a Professor in the History Department. His secondary affiliation is with the Collège de France, where he holds the International Chair of Turkish and Ottoman History. This position was established following the tenure of Gilles Veinstein (1945-2013), who held a similar chair from 1999 to 2011.
Professor Eldem's research focuses on Turkish and Ottoman history, with particular interest in the Ottoman Empire's relationship with the West. He also has significant expertise in archaeology and museology in the Ottoman Empire, which represents a key focus of his work. His lecture series at the Collège de France, titled 'The Ottoman Empire and Turkey Confronting the West,' reflects this research interest.
