Dr. Edgardo Giordani is an Associate Professor in the Department of Agricultural, Food, Environmental and Forestry Sciences and Technologies (DAGRI) at the University of Florence, specializing in General Arboriculture and Tree Crops. Born in Buenos Aires, Argentina on July 11, 1958, he earned his degree in Tropical and Subtropical Agriculture from the University of Florence and completed his PhD. He has been a researcher at the University of Florence since 1994 and currently serves as President of the Council of the Natural Resources Management for Tropical Rural Development Study Program.
Dr. Giordani's research focuses on fruit tree cultivation, particularly persimmon, peach, plum, pomegranate, and olive. His work spans genetic resource management, plant breeding and improvement, micropropagation techniques, and conservation of minor fruit tree species. He has designed and implemented the European Minor Fruit Tree Species Database and coordinated significant projects including the CE GENRES29 Project, the Perennial Horticulture Development Project in Afghanistan, and the LIFE - HORTISED Project.
His recent publications (2023-2025) demonstrate continued research activity across multiple areas of horticultural science, with a focus on sustainable cultivation practices, genetic diversity assessment, and biochemical analysis of fruit crops. Dr. Giordani has produced over 200 publications throughout his career, reflecting his substantial contribution to the field of fruit tree science.
Dr. Giordani has participated in numerous research projects addressing agricultural development, particularly in international contexts. His work with the Perennial Horticulture Development Project in Afghanistan demonstrates his commitment to applying horticultural science for sustainable development. Current participation in the Cyclolive project indicates ongoing research activity in olive cultivation systems.
