Edgar Weckert

Prof. Dr. Edgar Weckert serves as a member of the Scientific Council for the Helmholtz Institute Jena while maintaining his primary affiliation with DESY (Deutsches Elektronen-Synchrotron) in Hamburg, where he holds the academic rank of Professor.

His research spans advanced photon science domains including relativistic laser-plasma interactions, quantum field theory at extreme intensities, and high-precision X-ray spectroscopy. His expertise aligns with the Helmholtz Institute Jena's focus on cutting-edge photon science initiatives such as the POLARIS and JETI laser facilities, EUV-to-mid-IR photon sources, and quantum logic spectroscopy of highly-charged ions.

As a representative of DESY—a key partner institution in the Helmholtz Association network—he contributes to strategic oversight of the Institute's research direction and experimental facilities including the External Storage Ring (ESR), HITRAP, and CRYRING@ESR.
