Ed Stoddard is an Associate Professor in International Security at the University of Portsmouth, based in the School of Area Studies within the Faculty of Humanities & Social Sciences. His research focuses on regional security, armed conflict dynamics, and authoritarian governance across West Africa, the Levant, the Gulf, and the former Soviet Union. He leads projects like the British Academy-funded study on Sahel and Lake Chad conflicts. Stoddard holds a PhD in International Relations from Portsmouth (ESRC-funded) and has held fellowships at Freie Universität Berlin and Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna (Marie Curie).
He is a Visiting Professor at the College of Europe (Warsaw), a Fellow of Nigeria’s Society for Peace Studies and Practice, and affiliated with Lancaster University’s Centre for War and Diplomacy. His work intersects AI adoption in education and generative AI applications. Notable accolades include the EU Horizon 2020 Marie Curie Fellowship (2018) and a Future Leaders Fellowship nomination (2022).
Teaching specialties include security strategy, war studies, and energy security. He contributes to UK and international policy dialogues on conflict sensitivity and counterinsurgency through media engagements and 24+ professional activities (e.g., Chatham House workshops, invited talks at Sciences Po Bordeaux).
