Ed Buchel

Dr. Ed Buchel is a Professor and Head of the Department of Surgery at the Max Rady College of Medicine, University of Manitoba. He also serves as the Surgery Site Director for the Winnipeg Health Sciences Centre and Provincial Surgery Specialty Lead for Shared Health Manitoba. His clinical practice is based at the Bannatyne Campus in Winnipeg, focusing on advanced reconstructive techniques.

Research Interests: Dr. Buchel specializes in reconstructive microsurgery for cancer and trauma patients, alongside cosmetic plastic surgery. He co-leads the Manitoba Breast Reconstruction Program, pioneering autologous tissue and implant-based techniques to achieve natural aesthetic outcomes. His work emphasizes functional restoration and patient-centered care in complex reconstructive scenarios.

As Editor-in-Chief of the Canadian Journal of Plastic Surgery (2011–2021), he advanced scholarly discourse in the field. He currently mentors surgical trainees but is not accepting graduate students.

Clinical Programs: He is a key physician in the Manitoba Breast Reconstruction Program, developing state-of-the-art techniques to optimize cosmetic and functional results post-mastectomy.
