Prof. Eckhard Wolf is a Full Professor at Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München, affiliated with the Department of Molecular Animal Breeding and Biotechnology. He serves as Director of the Laboratory for Functional Genome Analysis (LAFUGA) and the Center for Innovative Medical Models (CiMM). His research focuses on xenotransplantation, diabetes, Duchenne muscular dystrophy, and genetically engineered pig models. He is Vice-Dean for Research in the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and leads multiple international projects, including DFG TRR 127 and EU COST Action BM1308.
Research interests span:
- Xenotransplantation: Developing pig-to-human organ/tissue grafts, with emphasis on islet and heart transplantation.
- Disease Modeling: Creating porcine models for diabetes and muscular dystrophy to study pathophysiology and therapies.
- Molecular Genetics: CRISPR-based modifications in pigs to address immunological barriers in transplantation.
His scientific awards include the Erwin Schrödinger-Prize (2000) and memberships in the Austrian Academy of Sciences and the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina.
He directs LAFUGA and CiMM, overseeing teams working on functional genomics and preclinical medical models. Current grants involve EU H2020 initiatives and collaborations on beta-cell transplantation and large-animal disease modeling.
