Dr Ebony Birchall is a Lecturer at Macquarie Law School and Deputy Director of the BHR Access to Justice Lab (A2J Lab). She serves on Macquarie University's ethics committee for high-risk medical research. Her roles include running the Strategic Litigation Clinic, teaching Refugee Law and Torts, and supervising honours and postgraduate students. Ebony holds a PhD from the University of Wollongong, with postgraduate studies in human rights at the University of Sydney and international human rights law at the University of Oxford.
Her research focuses on challenging human rights abuses by powerful actors, particularly in immigration detention, corporate accountability, and privacy law. Notable projects include editing a collection on strategic human rights litigation and drafting a book on human rights in Australia's immigration detention network. Ebony has secured significant awards, including the 2022 Emerging Scholar Award and the 2025 Early and Mid-Career Researcher Fellowship.
Previously, she practiced as a human rights lawyer, leading landmark cases like the Manus Island Class Action and the 2014 Immigration Data Breach Litigation. She collaborates with community legal centers and appears frequently in media as an advocate for social justice.
