Eberhard Scharnowski (1940–2017) was a Professor of Natural Science and Technical Foundations at the Burg Giebichenstein University of Art and Design Halle (1992–2005). His career began with a Diplom-Ingenieur from TU Dresden (1967), followed by a Dr.-Ing. (1984) on the aerodynamics of glass-fiber-reinforced plastic (GFK) vehicles. He pioneered lightweight automotive design, notably the rovomobil—a car with a 13-year aerodynamic world record displayed at the Volkswagen Museum. His work extended to solar-powered vehicles (e.g., the HALF project, winner of the 1996 German Solar Car Championship) and collaborations with industries like Airbus (A380 components).
Research interests included advanced materials, aerodynamics, and sustainable transportation. Post-retirement (2005), he continued advising on aerospace projects. His legacy includes contributions to design education and exhibitions like ZUKÜNFTE, showcasing future-oriented materials and design.
Awards highlight his impact: the rovomobil’s world record and HALF’s championship win. His academic career spanned teaching, research, and industry partnerships, blending engineering rigor with artistic design principles.
