Eben Kirksey is an Associate Professor of Anthropology at the University of Oxford's School of Anthropology & Museum Ethnography. Specializing in multispecies ethnography, his research bridges anthropology, environmental studies, and science & technology studies. His work examines biotechnology in Shenzhen, posthuman ethics, and the intersections of science with societies.
Education: British Marshall Scholar at Oxford (MPhil), PhD in Anthropology from UC Santa Cruz. Previously taught at Princeton University, Deep Springs College, and New College of Florida. Founded the Environmental Humanities program at UNSW Sydney and collaborates with the Alfred Deakin Institute in Melbourne.
Research focuses on CRISPR gene editing, zoonotic diseases, and multispecies justice. Notable publications include *The Mutant Project* (2020), exploring Jiankui He's controversial gene-editing experiments. Current projects investigate coronavirus spillover in Southeast Asia and typhoon impacts in southern China.
Advocates for nonhuman agency and decolonial methodologies. Maintains collaborations across institutions globally, emphasizing interdisciplinary approaches to ecological and technological challenges.
