Earl Ball is a Senior Fellow and Adjunct Associate Professor at the University of Pennsylvania Graduate School of Education. He joined Penn GSE in 2007 to develop leadership programs for independent school administrators and co-directs the School Leadership Program, a Master's degree initiative fostering leadership across independent, public, and charter schools. Prior to his academic role, he served as Head of the William Penn Charter School in Philadelphia for 31 years, gaining extensive experience in independent school governance and administration.
His professional engagements include chairing accreditation teams for national and regional independent school associations (e.g., Middle States Association, Pennsylvania Association of Independent Schools) and consulting on executive leadership and board governance. He also serves on the national board of the Nazarbeyev Intellectual Schools in Kazakhstan. Earl Ball’s career began in the Baltimore public schools, later transitioning to teacher education roles at Penn GSE and Johns Hopkins University.
Research interests focus on independent education systems, leadership development, and the intersection of policy, practice, and governance in schools. He is actively involved in Quaker education initiatives through the Friends Council on Education, contributing to both administrative and philosophical dimensions of the sector.
