Professor Eamonn Gaffney is a University Lecturer in Applied Mathematics (Mathematical Biology) at the Mathematical Institute and a Tutorial Fellow at Brasenose College, University of Oxford. He holds a PhD and MA from the University of Cambridge. His research focuses on biological and biomedical applications of mathematics, including tumor modeling, pattern formation mechanisms, reaction-diffusion systems, and microbiological fluid dynamics. He teaches courses such as Mathematical Biology and Ecology and supervises DPhil students in these areas. Gaffney's work has been supported by the Wellcome Trust and has led to publications in journals like Physical Review E, Journal of Fluid Mechanics, and PLoS Computational Biology. His research explores topics ranging from drug delivery mechanisms in ocular tissues to the dynamics of microswimmers and cytokine interaction networks.
Research Interests:
- Mathematical modeling of tumor growth and chemotherapy scheduling
- Pattern formation on growing domains and time-delay systems
- Fluid dynamics of microbiological systems (e.g., spermatozoa dynamics)
- Reaction-diffusion systems in biological contexts
Awards:
- Wellcome Trust Post-Doctoral Training Fellowship in Mathematical Biology
Teaching: Undergraduate tutorials in applied mathematics, third-year Mathematical Biology and Ecology lectures, and master’s-level Mathematical Physiology courses.
His recent work includes studies on ocular pharmacokinetics, cytokine network inference, and the hydrodynamics of microswimmers in complex flows.
