E.K. Tan is an Associate Professor of Comparative Literature and Sinophone Studies at Stony Brook University, holding roles in the Department of English and the Department of Asian & Asian American Studies. He has served as Department Chair of Asian & Asian American Studies since 2021 and has held various academic leadership roles since 2007.
His research focuses on Sinophone Studies, Queer Theory, Asian Diaspora Studies, Postcolonial Criticism, and Comparative Literature. He explores topics such as transnational cultural identity, queer kinship, Mandarinization policies, and the intersection of literature and cinema in Southeast Asia and beyond. His first book, *Rethinking Chineseness*, examines Nanyang Chinese literary identities, while his current project *Queer Homecoming* challenges heteronormative kinship structures in Sinophone societies.
Dr. Tan has received accolades including the 102 Faculty Fellow (2010–2011) and the Campus Award for Excellence in Teaching (2005). His work has been published in journals like *Prism: Theory and Modern Chinese Literature* and *Sun Yat-Sen Journal of Humanities*. He has also engaged in interdisciplinary initiatives such as organizing human rights film festivals and conferences on global Asian literatures.
