E. Mos - Oppersma serves as an Assistant Professor in the Cardiovascular and Respiratory Physiology group at the University of Twente's Faculty of Science and Technology. His career spans Technical Medicine education, PhD research in intensive care breathing support, and postdoctoral work at Massachusetts General Hospital before returning to Twente in 2019.
His educational background includes:
- Technical Medicine degree at University of Twente (graduation project on pulmonary function at Medisch Spectrum Twente)
- PhD from University of Twente (2018) on monitoring and regulation of supported breathing in Intensive Care, conducted with Radboud University Medical Center
- Postdoctoral fellowship at Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston (2018-2019) developing algorithms for respiratory event detection
Research centers on respiratory physiology with emphasis on noninvasive assessment of lung mechanics and respiratory muscle activity. He specializes in electromyography (EMG) of diaphragm and respiratory muscles using surface electrodes, addressing challenges like movement artifacts to enable clinical monitoring in ICU and home ventilation settings. His work integrates pressure/flow monitoring to advance data acquisition and analysis, ultimately improving mechanical ventilation weaning protocols through deeper understanding of respiratory pump physiology.
He operates within the Cardiovascular and Respiratory Physiology group under Biomedical Imaging & Sensing at Twente's TechMed Centre, contributing to interdisciplinary medical technology research.
