E. Giebels is a Professor at the Psychology of Conflict, Risk and Safety (BMS-HIB-PCRS) department within the Faculty of Behavioural, Management and Social Sciences at the University of Twente. Their research focuses on human reactions and social interactions in high-risk, high-stakes situations, including hostage negotiations, crisis management, and resilience in organizational contexts.
- PhD in Social and Organizational Psychology from the University of Groningen (1999)
Research interests span conflict resolution, social influence, crime psychology, coping mechanisms, and societal responses to crises. Highlights include collaborations with global hostage negotiation teams, a 2015 evaluation of the Dutch government’s response to the MH17 disaster, and chairing the Ministry of Defence’s 2017-2018 committee on military social safety.
Scientific awards:
- RUBIN theory-to-practice award (2012)
- Fellow of the Association for Psychological Science (2017)
Additional roles include Vice-Dean of Research (2014-2022) at the University of Twente, co-founder of the Tech4People and BMSlab programs, and membership on the Supervisory Board of Erasmus University Rotterdam (since 2020, Vice-Chair from 2023). They led the development of the Mindlab theatre program on academic integrity (2019) and participate in interdisciplinary projects like ADAPT, funded by an NWO gravitation grant (2024).
