Professor E. Arunan is a faculty member in the Department of Inorganic and Physical Chemistry at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore, where he leads research in molecular spectroscopy, chemical bonding, and reaction dynamics. His laboratory operates India's first Pulsed Nozzle Fourier Transform Microwave Spectrometer and collaborates with the Laboratory for Hypersonic and Shockwave Research.
His research focuses on experimental and computational investigations of intermolecular interactions, notably demonstrating hydrogen bonding in H2S (leading to IUPAC's 2011 redefinition of hydrogen bonds) and discovering 'carbon bonding' through argon-propargyl alcohol studies. Current work spans van der Waals spectroscopy, astrochemistry, and high-temperature reaction kinetics for space/defense applications.
Recent publications reveal strong interdisciplinary trends: microwave spectroscopy of organic complexes (2023-2025), theoretical frameworks for non-covalent bonds, shock-induced dissociation studies with astrophysical relevance, and combustion kinetics of cyclic hydrocarbons. This reflects consistent integration of experimental spectroscopy with computational modeling across physical chemistry subfields.

Prof. Arunan mentors IISc graduate students but does not accept external interns or summer projects. Laboratory operations include home-built microwave spectrometers for rotational spectroscopy of weakly bound complexes and partnerships with IISc's Aerospace Engineering Department for shock tube studies on fuel ignition delays.
