Dwight E. Waddell is an Associate Professor of Electrical Engineering and Research Associate Professor in Exercise Science at The University of Mississippi (Ole Miss). He serves as Director of Biomedical Engineering and holds dual affiliations across engineering and health sciences. His research focuses on neuromechanics, biomechanics, and cognitive neuroscience, with particular emphasis on gait analysis, postural control, and neurorehabilitation applications. Waddell leads collaborative projects involving neural mechanisms of movement disorders (e.g., Parkinson’s disease) and sensory feedback interventions for speech and motor impairments.
His academic background includes advanced training in biomedical engineering and neuroscience. Key research themes include:
- Biomechanical analysis of slip/fall recovery mechanisms
- Tai Chi interventions for gait improvement
- Prostaglandin’s role in muscle regeneration
- Corticospinal pathway dynamics during motor tasks
Recent publications (2018-2012) highlight:
- Slip recovery biomechanics in high-risk populations
- Novel tactile feedback systems for stuttering
- Caffeine’s neuromuscular effects on cycling performance
Waddell directs the “Heads in the Game” STEM outreach program promoting concussion research and education. His work bridges engineering principles with clinical applications in neurorehabilitation and exercise physiology.
