Dwayne Avery is an Associate Professor in the Department of English at Memorial University of Newfoundland (MUN), coordinating the Communication Studies Program. He holds a PhD in Communications from McGill University, an MPhil in Philosophy from MUN, and a Postdoctoral Fellowship in Film & Television Studies from York University. His research focuses on media and film studies, particularly exploring geographic and mobile approaches to media, including urban/domestic/global frameworks and transcultural narratives. Current projects include Anthropocene Narratives, Ruin Photography, and Mobile Media and Conceptions of Home.
Dr. Avery teaches undergraduate courses such as CMST 2001 and CMST 4001, and supervises graduate research in areas like Urban and Architectural Space in Media, Environmental Narratives, and Post-Apocalyptic Narratives. He actively recruits PhD candidates interested in media/film studies, offering stipends and opportunities for co-authorship. MUN’s English Department supports interdisciplinary media studies through five faculty researchers and robust course offerings.
His work bridges academic and practical realms, emphasizing media’s role in migration, globalization, and cultural identity. He has published widely on cinema and media’s engagement with motherhood, urban spaces, and transnational dynamics, with recent projects addressing mobile media’s impact on global home-making experiences.
