Dr. Duygu Selcen is a Professor of Neurology at Mayo Clinic College of Medicine, specializing in Child and Adolescent Neurology within the Department of Neurology. Based in Rochester, Minnesota, she directs clinical and research efforts in neuromuscular disorders through Mayo Clinic's comprehensive neurology infrastructure.
Her educational background includes an MD from Hacettepe University Medical School (1988), followed by specialized training at Mayo Clinic College of Medicine (Neuromuscular Disorders Fellowship 2001) and Children's Hospital of Michigan (Pediatric Neurology Fellowship 1997). She holds dual board certifications in Neurology with Special Qualifications in Child Neurology (2000) and Neuromuscular Medicine (2011).
Dr. Selcen's research focuses on congenital myasthenic syndromes, myofibrillar myopathies, and muscular dystrophies, with particular expertise in genotype-phenotype correlations for over 35 disease-causing genes. Her work bridges molecular pathology with clinical diagnostics, evidenced by her leadership in developing standardized classification systems for neuromuscular disorders.
Analysis of her 81+ publications (1993-2025) reveals consistent contributions to neuromuscular disease mechanisms and therapeutic innovations, with recent emphasis on autoimmune myopathies (2024) and pediatric nodopathies (2025). Her research demonstrates strong interdisciplinary collaboration across neurology, genetics, and pathology domains.
- Honorary Membership Award, Mediterranean Society of Myology (2018)
- President's Prize for Young Myologist, World Muscle Society (2007)
- Elsevier Best Oral Presentation Award, World Muscle Society (2005)
- Mayo Foundation Scholar (2001)
- National University Entrance Examination Top 100 (1982)
As an active grant reviewer for NIH NINDS and international foundations, Dr. Selcen shapes research funding priorities while maintaining her own productive laboratory. Her teaching excellence, recognized by Mayo Medical School in 2004, extends to mentoring through the Neurobiology of Disease in Children Symposium. Current work includes investigating immune-mediated megaconial myopathy and pediatric autoimmune nodopathies through Mayo Clinic's muscle pathology database.
